Work continues in upgrading SH2, 30 and 33 including adding safety barriers, roundabouts, and improving road surfaces to reduce accidents.

Membership discussions continue such as the best options for the industry. We are asked by some operators if full closure is the best option on our main highways. We continue to explore what we can do better for the industry and see how we can improve our communication with you.

Taupo weighbridge opening 2025

I had an opportunity recently to view the Taupo weighbridge that is currently under construction due to be open at the end of 2025.

The new weighbridge will feature state-of-the-art technology to enhance road safety and compliance. Its strategic position on SH5 and SH1 makes it a key hub for monitoring freight from both the North and South Island supply chains.

SH5 and SH1 will have weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales located before the weigh station. The WIM scales will measure the axle and gross vehicle weight as vehicle pass over the sensors at normal traffic speed. The vehicles exceeding legal weight limits will then be flagged at the Taupo weigh station facilities focusing on further enforcement and reducing the inconvenience for compliant operators.  In summary these new weigh-in-motion scales will enhance compliance, providing accurate, efficient and non-intrusive monitoring, and therefore hopefully fairer enforcement practices.

The opening of the Taupo weighbridge in 2025, strategically located in the heart of the North Island will improve road safety, enhance compliance.
