Here are some aspects to think about before implementing an app:
Accessibility – Can you access the app anywhere at any time? Or do you need internet access? With our rugged terrain, internet access is not a given in all locations, so having an app that can’t be used ‘offline’, is counterproductive. Some apps offer the ability to work offline, giving you access irrespective of internet access – but not all!
Cellphone policy – You should have a cellphone policy in place, so the implementation and use of an app will need to be incorporated with your current policy. Do you have employees who don’t like using apps or cellphones?
Change – Following on from this, we know that change can be difficult to navigate for some people. How will you navigate the implementation of an app with your employees?
Compliance levels – An app may increase the participation in health and safety activities that must be completed daily, such as prestart checks, toolbox meetings and reporting incidents. Does the app provide an opportunity for employees and employers to meet their health and safety responsibilities in an easier way?
Cost, ease of use and fit for purpose – Apps can differ widely in cost. Is it worth it? Are there better options? It’s all well and good having a nice app in place. But does it fit your business needs? Is it easy to train and use? Flexibility and options to customise for your needs without limitations is important, so do your homework.
Prequalification support – Apps can be an easy way to collate the information you require for prequalification assessments. They can also provide high quality reporting, allowing you to analyse behaviours, trends and potential issues.
Retention of data – If at any time you decide the app is no longer needed for your business, do you get to keep all your data? These records are important to keep.
