Who we are

National Road Carriers Association

With over 80 years of history, National Road Carriers provides professional support for thousands of members who choose to make a living in the road transport industry, through advocacy, representation and advice.

Since 1936, we have been looking out for Kiwi transport operators and having their backs while they focus on running their business. Our members range from single truck operators to courier vans to large transport operators and transport everything from fresh fruit to LPG, presenting the highly valued opportunity for members to connect with other owners and drivers from different walks of life.
Today we are still dedicated to our founding principles, and we can support you, whatever your size, location or load type.

Learn about our history

In the mid-1930s the road transport industry was just coming out of the Great Depression. Truckers in Auckland were locked in a David versus Goliath struggle. The Master Carriers dominated – they had all the benefits, from discounts to lobbying clout. Small town carriers meanwhile, were struggling to survive.
On Monday October 5 1936, twenty nine of these Owner Carriers gathered at the Trades Hall in Hobson Street to form an association. Their mission? To serve the needs of operators like you.

And guess what? They won out. In the 8 decades since then, National Road Carriers has become a progressive nationwide organisation. Still sticks up for road carriers of every size – from the one person owner/operator to some of the largest road carriers in New Zealand.

The Transport Industry

The transport sector employs over 108,000 people which is 4 percent of the national workforce. Although Auckland hires 42 percent of all transport sector workers, there is no significant difference in transport’s share of employment by region. (Source MBIE).

It is responsible for 5% of New Zealand’s GDP.

Most transport firms operated as essential services during COVID 19 lockdowns with 60% of the total workforce deemed essential workers.

Currently the Transport Industry has a shortage of workers.

Transport can be a rewarding and interesting career and many employees go on to own their own business.
