National Road Carriers (NRC) is pleased to acknowledge the successful completion of the recent SH1 Brynderwyn Hills recovery works — delivered faster than planned and with minimal disruption to the freight sector.
As many of you know, NRC strongly advocates for road maintenance to be completed efficiently, in a timely manner, and where possible under full closures that allow crews to “get in and get it done.” The Brynderwyn project is a great example of this approach paying off.
Originally scheduled for two super weekend closures, NZTA and its contractors completed all major resurfacing in just one, despite heavy rain early in the closure period. Crews worked day and night to deliver a full-width asphalt surface, reinstate the passing lanes, and restore the 80km/h speed limit well ahead of plan. The second planned closure (20–23 November) is now no longer required — welcome news for transport operators heading into the busy pre-Christmas season.
NRC has been in close contact with NZTA throughout this process, ensuring timely and accurate information was communicated to the industry. This strong level of collaboration meant members were well prepared, detours were understood, and the network continued to function with minimal disruption.
NZTA also took advantage of the closure to complete a range of additional tasks that would normally require stop/go traffic control — including vegetation work, guardrail repairs, retaining wall inspections, and sign replacements. By bundling this work into the same closure window, further delays this summer have been avoided.
This is a positive example of what can be achieved when roading work is well planned, clearly communicated, and delivered efficiently. NRC will continue to advocate for this approach across the network, ensuring our members benefit from fewer delays, faster outcomes, and improved road quality.
A big thank you to the NZTA teams and contractors who pushed hard to complete the works ahead of schedule. This is a great result for Northland and for our freight industry.
