Feedback open on Battery energy storage systems roadmap
Today the Electricity Authority published a roadmap that sets out our work in relation to battery energy storage systems (BESSs) over the next two years.
BESSs will become increasingly important in the future as New Zealand’s power system relies on more intermittent and variable generation. BESS technology is evolving rapidly and the Authority has several workstreams to update the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010 (Code) to enable BESSs to be integrated efficiently into New Zealand’s power system. The full range of work they have underway is set out in the roadmap, which you can view here:

They welcome any feedback on the Authority’s initial draft of the roadmap by 31 July 2025. They are particularly interested in your views on any potential gaps in the roadmap or whether they should reprioritise work.
If you have any feedback or questions about the roadmap, please get in touch with the Future Security and Resilience team at fsr@ea.govt.nz.
