Ōtaki to Levin Expressway downgrade disappointing

National Road Carriers is disappointed by the Government’s decision to downgrade the Ōtaki to Levin Expressway project. This critical infrastructure link is essential not only for regional connectivity and safety but also for ensuring the resilience of the national freight network.

The longer we delay investment in projects of this scale, the greater the cost to New Zealanders – not only in terms of construction, but also in lost productivity, increased congestion, and compromised safety. History shows that postponing vital infrastructure only leads to escalating costs and missed opportunities.

It is imperative, at the very least, that the corridor is protected so the full investment can be made when funding allows. Allowing the corridor to become encumbered or fragmented risks undermining the viability of the project being completed as first envisaged at some point in the future.

We urge the Government to work closely with local councils and the transport sector to ensure this route remains a priority, and the long-term strategic needs of New Zealand’s transport network are not sacrificed for short-term savings.
