SH1 Brynderwyn Hills closure – plan ahead
State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills will undergo major resurfacing next month, requiring full closures over two consecutive ‘super weekends’. These works are the final stage of the SH1 Brynderwyn Hills recovery project, improving journey reliability and safety ahead of the busy summer season.
Full Closure Dates:
- First Super Weekend: Thu 13 Nov (12:01 am) – Sun 16 Nov (11:59 pm)
- Open: Mon 17 Nov – Wed 19 Nov
- Second Super Weekend: Thu 20 Nov (12:01 am) – Sun 23 Nov (11:59 pm)
What’s Happening:
- Full-width asphalt resurfacing, lane markings, and passing lanes reinstated
- Route speed restored to 80 km/h
- Night works prior to first closure with minimal stop/go delays
- Crews working 24/4, with 75% of Auckland & Northland paving teams deployed
Why this matters:
NZTA coordinated with NRC early in the planning process, highlighting the value of proactive stakeholder engagement. Early notice allows operators to plan delivery routes efficiently, reducing the impact compared to longer closures.
Detour Routes:
- Cove Road: Light vehicles only (no trucks with trailers)
- Paparoa–Oakleigh Road: Trucks & trailers up to 50MAX
- SH12 / SH14: Over-dimensional & HPMVs
Operators are encouraged to familiarise themselves with detours and adjust schedules accordingly.
