The country’s CVSC network where police can carry out their heavy vehicle inspections is being enhanced.
Existing CVSCs are being upgraded and new sites added, to create 12 CVSCs on high volume routes throughout New Zealand covering nearly half of the heavy vehicle kilometres travelled. There will be eight regular size CVSCs and four larger ones.
- The elite ones (larger ones) will have a weighbridge, in-road technology, inspection sheds, roller brake machines, inspection pits and office buildings.
The smaller scale ones will be able to be upgraded but will initially have just a weighbridge, in-road technology and a small office.
Many of you would have already experienced the completed ones at Glasnevin and Paengaroa. These, along with the below sites, will use weigh-in-motion scales and number plate recognition cameras to screen passing vehicles 24/7.
The roll out of the next planned ones is underway:
- Marsden, Northland (this will be part of a specialised site which includes other amenities, NRC is engaging with the landowner)
- Stanley Street, Auckland (under construction)
- Bombay, Auckland
- Albany, Auckland
- Taupo, Waikato (positive discussions are happening with respect to including other amenities)
- Tauranga Port, Bay of Plenty
- Napier, Hawke’s Bay
- Mackays Crossing, Wellington
- Rakaia, northbound, Canterbury
So, what’s NRC’s role with these you ask? NRC is included in the planning and design of these sites and advocates on behalf of our members that newly constructed sites should include other amenities such as lighting, toilet facilities, stock effluent dump facilities and food availability such as coffee vans.
Drivers can find themselves having rest breaks at these sites, so we need to ensure drivers’ wellbeing is considered.

What you need to know
The electronic sign may signal you to pull into the commercial vehicle safety centre (CVSC) by displaying your number plate, so get to know your plate number.
A heavy vehicle is any vehicle, including a bus, coach or mobile home, registered with a class of MD3, MD4, ME, NB, NC, TC or TD. These are generally vehicles that weigh over 3500kg.
You must stop at a CVSC if you’re instructed to. Not doing so can incur a $1000 fine.
