Woody’s Corner -Auckland Transport Update

NRC is pleased that Auckland Transport (AT) is working on a number of initiatives to improve transport in an increasingly congested Auckland roading network:

  • Strand Optimisation Project,
  • Onewa Road,
  • Cycling Network Mangere & Favona Road.

However, AT has room to improve on engaging properly with the freight sector to ensure their proposed changes improve freight efficiency and safety for all road users.  We are making these concerns clear to AT.

Strand Optimisation Project

AT, in collaboration with NZTA, is implementing several improvements along Stanley Street to enhance traffic flow, safety and accessibility in Auckland City transport corridors. Known as the Strand Optimisation Project this focuses on the corridor from Alten road to Tamaki Drive.

For the freight industry there will be a Special Vehicle Lane (SVL) for freight and high occupancy vehicles that will operate during peak hours from Monday to Friday. Minor enhancements are expected from SH16 to the Stanley Street intersection. There will be camber adjustments to the road to help reduce truck roll overs that have previously occurred by St George Road.

New loading zones and paid parking areas will be installed, with paid parking spaces being operational at certain times of the day.

Looking ahead, the City Centre masterplan is to transform Stanley Street and The Strand into a multipurpose boulevard, with a safe pedestrian area and cycle path. NRC has been informed these areas will be separated from the roadway and will include zebra crossings at side streets to prioritise users.  We understand Stage 1 is near completion and the detailed design and consenting process for stage 2 is being worked through now. NZTA anticipate that physical works will begin in April 2025, although the final timeline will depend on the outcome of the consenting process and the final construction methodology.

Onewa Road

AT has proposed several changes to Onewa Road to drive traffic flow efficiencies and promote alternative modes of transport. The good news is intersection optimisation is on the way. AT wishes to upgrade the traffic signalling systems at key intersections such as Lake Road, to minimise delays and improve traffic flow. Camera installation to assist queue management at these busy intersections are also being explored. NRC has asked for technology to expedite freight trucks at intersections (similar to buses) to be considered.

The proposals are part of a broader effort by AT to optimise existing road infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles, and to improve public transport efficiency.

AT is also implementing a shared pathway for pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooters on the northern side of the road. Their aim is to provide a safer and more accessible route for non-motorised users.

NRC has raised concerns about the potential design, road user safety and the impact on the strategic freight network. With this road being a critical part of the Auckland freight network it is imperative any changes by Auckland Transport factor in the safety and accessibility aspect of freight. With one company alone doing 100 truck journeys every day on this road to one customer, Onewa Road is a vital transport link, making it essential to get the infrastructure design right to ensure safety and efficiency for all road users.

The biggest concern NRC has made very clear to AT is asking why the freight industry was not advised of these changes.

NRC is submitting on behalf of industry, and we encourage all operators to feedback on these changes. Consultation closes on April 6, 2025.  Click here to have your say.
