Plan ahead with NZTA before ferry schedules change
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is asking transport operators to get in touch to discuss worktime variations and ensure agreements are in place before ferry capacity is reduced this year. Fewer ferry sailing across Cook Strait each week may limit drivers’ break time on a return trip between the North and South Islands, causing drivers to breach legal worktime hours.
NZTA encourage operators to contact them before ferry schedules change so it can work with them to find a solution that will minimise the disruption to their business and the supply chain.
NZTA will allow transport operators to vary their work time hours if they can prove they have systems in place to actively manage driver work and rest time.
NZTA will need to assess the systems operators have in place for rest breaks and managing fatigue before granting a variation to worktime hours.
Safety systems like cameras in truck cabs to monitor driver attention and fatigue are an example of the conditions NZTA may require operators to put in place.
Email driverandoperator@nzta.govt.nz to discuss your circumstances so together with NZTA you can find a solution to meet your business needs and keep drivers safe.
