Employment Outlook Survey results

Last month we asked members a few questions regarding their intentions regarding recruitment over the next twelve months.
Given the current state of the sector, the forward outlook was positive with more than 85% intending to expand their workforce in the next 12 months.

The types of roles also reflected the wide range of skills required to operate a transport business.

The wage expectations were realistic with all stating they expect to pay at or above the current market rates.
There is still a slight hesitation regarding using MSD candidates.

The concerns were mainly related to a tight labour market where the candidate pool held by MSD faced challenges to being work ready for many operators. NRC would recommend members take advantage of MSD as the economy picks up as they have additional resources to assist employers and those members that get in touch first will get the best candidates.

Overseas recruitment was expected to be required for most respondents. There was concern that the pathway to residency was no longer available which will make recruiting top candidates difficult. Concerns also regarding validation of skills and ensuring overseas candidates’ skills were appropriate for New Zealand

In conclusion the majority expect that they will need to expand their workforce as the economic conditions improve and the industry responds to increased demands.
