Behind the Scenes, Ahead for the Industry: Why Association Membership Matters More Than Ever

Paula Rogers, NRC Commercial Transport Manager

In any strong industry, there are organisations working quietly—often invisibly—behind the scenes to keep things moving. In road transport, this work is not just helpful; it’s essential. As an association, we are often judged on what can be seen—member benefits, partner discounts, events, and resources. And while these are valuable, they are only a small part of the bigger picture.

The true strength of belonging to an industry association often lies in the work that most people never witness.

Every week, our team is at the table—sometimes literally—for endless rounds of meetings, consultations, and urgent conversations with government officials, regulators, councils, and agencies. We advocate on behalf of operators who simply don’t have the time, bandwidth, or access to fight every regulatory battle or navigate every legislative shift. We provide regulatory assistance, help interpret the ever-changing rulebook, and give operators a voice where it counts.

Our submissions shape policy decisions.
Our feedback influences roading project design and implementation.
Our presence ensures closures, detours, works programmes, reflect the realities of transport operators—not just what looks good on paper.

This work doesn’t make headlines, and it doesn’t always come with immediate, visible wins. But without it, the industry would be in a very different place—one with less influence, more red tape, and decisions made about us rather than with us.

From time to time, we hear from operators who say they “don’t need” us. And while every business must make its own decisions, the truth is this: if organisations like ours weren’t here, the wider industry would be in dire straits. The gains we secure, the pressures we alleviate, and the issues we prevent rarely show up as line items on a balance sheet—but they directly affect every operator on the road, member or not.

Membership isn’t just about what you get—it’s about ensuring the entire sector remains strong, stable, respected, and heard. It’s an investment in an industry where operators can thrive rather than be buried under poorly informed decisions.

To our members, we thank you.
Your support enables the work that helps keeps our industry moving forward.
We will continue to support you on a day to day basis whilst striving to protect the future of our industry.

Because when it comes to safeguarding the road transport sector, standing together isn’t just beneficial—it’s vital.
