Latest update from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team

Vehicle Management System [VMS] digital signage.

The weigh in motion is up and running from SH1 and SH16 leading to Stanley Street.

Drivers need to know their registration plates and follow the directions.

It may also be set to ‘ALL HEAVY VEHICLES GO TO CVSC 400M’.

Drivers who fail to follow the direction of the VMS digital signage risk instant fine of $1,000.00.

The sign will either have your HMV registration with GO TO CVSC 400M, or as above.

Safety Defects

Unfortunately CVST are seeing far too many basic safety defects that should have been picked up on drivers prestart walk arounds and resolved before driving onto the network.

If you see a message such as what is shown on the left appear on the dash of the truck DO NOT take the vehicle on the road.

CVST should never see this alert when the truck stops at a CVSC site!

Worktime Rules.

MOT stats describe in 2023, there were 25 fatal crashes, 59 serious injury crashes, and 455 minor injury crashes where driver fatigue was a contributing factor. In these crashes, 30 people died, 80 people were seriously injured, and 576 people suffered minor injuries.

Of note, over this period in 2023, MOT describes crashes involving trucks (any cause or contributing factor) totaled 51 fatal crashes, 119 serious injury crashes, and 510 minor injury crashes where trucks were involved.

In these crashes, 57 people died, 158 people were seriously injured, and 673 people suffered minor injuries. Fatigue related crashes seem to have a high percentage.

The most effective way to help prevent fatigue taking over your driving skills is to maintain an up to date worktime logbook. Operators should be ensuring all employees follow this regime. Drivers should be following the regime whether completing a logbook or not (EG – exempt).

If you do not have your logbook to produce you are liable to an instant fine of $500 and incure 35 demerit points, plus being prohibited from driving for 10 or 24 hours, depending on circumstances established.
We are noticing a number of drivers accruing above penalties recently.

Stay safe out on the roads, we’ve only just past the quarter year mark, lets make good decisions that keep our roads safe.

Basic breaches of rules:

4.2.6 The control (service) and supply (emergency) air lines on a coded vehicle must be installed so that when facing the cover of the female section of the coupling housing:

  • the control (service) line must be on the left side of the housing and coloured blue or black and the supply (emergency) line must be on the right side of the housing and coloured red or yellow; and
  • the required colour coding must be situated within 150mm of the coupling or junction

The examples above left and middle simply cost Operators down me to sort out with the above right example has no excuses and can risk all road users safety. Keep protective coils fitted correctly.

Rear mud guards over twin tyred axles.

Tape is not a repair job. The guards must be repaired to manufacturers specifications.

Tyre Defects.

If you think the tyres on the left have plenty of ‘life’ then you need to reconsider your occupation. Life is at risk of being lost with this reckless decision making taking a vehicle out onto the road with tyres in this state.

Dangerous Goods
