Northland speed reviews – consultation now open
We want your feedback on proposed lower speed limits on short sections of the following state highways in Northland:
- SH1 between Moerewa and Kawakawa
- SH10 Kaingaroa (north and south)
- SH12 between Opononi and Ōmāpere
These proposed speed limit changes are in response to strong community feedback that current speed limits aren’t suitable for these stretches of road.

What’s being proposed
We are reviewing speed limits on these sections of road, in line with the requirements of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024.

- SH10 Kaingaroa (north and south) – we propose lowering the speed limit back to 80km/h from southwest of Pukewhai Road to northeast of Duncan Road, and from southwest of Duncan Road to southwest of Pairatahi Road
- SH12 Opononi north – we propose lowering the speed limit to 60 km/h from southwest of Pakanae Cemetery Road to northeast of Fairlie Crescent
- SH12 Opononi – we propose lowering the speed limit to 50 km/h from northeast of Fairlie Crescent to south of Kokohuia Road
