Work starting next week

  • SH36 Kennedy Road roundabout, Tauriko: Starting on Monday April 20 for 6 nights, Monday to Thursday and then Sunday 26 and Monday 27 April, road resurfacing will take place at the Kennedy Road roundabout in Tauriko between 6pm and 6am. There will be temporary traffic management in place with a reduced speed limit each night.

 

  • SH29A Barkes Corner: A night of road resurfacing is scheduled for Monday April 20 between 8pm and 5am. Just for the night, there will be a road layout change on the roundabout to enable the works to take place, including traffic management and a reduced speed limit.

  • SH29 Tauriko: The first stage of significant stormwater and underground service upgrades on SH29, between the SH29/SH36 roundabout and Cambridge Road, has been completed. The second stage of works to install new stormwater pipes and catchpits has been delayed. New dates will be communicated ahead of time.

 

  • SH2 Mirrielees road off-ramp: Mirrielees Road off-ramp will be closed for resurfacing between 8pm and 5am on Wednesday 6 May. Detouring vehicles should exit SH2 Takitimu Drive at the Chapel Street off-ramp and turn left onto Marsh Street to access Mirrielees Road.

  • SH2 Tauranga Harbour Bridge: The Tauranga Harbour bridge will have lane switches on Tuesday 5 May at night for resurfacing between 8pm and 5am. There will be a reduced speed limit in place.

  • SH29A Maungatapu Bridge: Investigations on the Maungatapu Bridge will start on Tuesday 28 April and continue until Friday 8 May, Monday to Friday between 7pm and 5am each night. There will be stop/go traffic management, a reduced speed limit and down to a single lane at times. There may be small delays while work is taking place.

 

Work underway

 

  • SH29 Kaimai Range, Ruahihi Bluffs: Crews are onsite at the Ruahihi Bluffs, near the Ruahihi Power Station, until late April carrying out stabilisation work. Overnight stop/go traffic management is in place with a 30km/h speed limit.

  • SH29 Ōmanawa Bridge: Construction activity is underway close to the Hamilton-bound edge of SH29 between Ōmanawa Bridge and the Ōmanawa Road intersection. The Hamilton-bound lane has been shifted and the shoulder (from the bridge to west of the intersection) and the left-turn slip lane into Ōmanawa Road is closed. 

  • SH29/Ōmanawa Road intersection: Further traffic management has been installed at the intersection. A merge lane for people travelling from Ōmanawa Road towards Tauranga on SH29 has been reinstated, the right turn from SH29 into Ōmanawa Road removed, and larger speed limit signs, clearer road markings and side islands west of the intersection added to help drivers stick to the 50km/h speed limit. 

  • SH29 Tauriko: Construction is continuing along the northern side of SH29 in Tauriko Village with temporary traffic management including shoulder closures, temporary speed limits, and mobile operations as required. The slip lane from SH29 onto Takitimu Drive Toll Road (at the SH29/SH36 roundabout) remains closed to traffic Monday to Friday during off-peak hours, 9:30am to 3:30pm while drainage work is carried out on the nearby wetland. This is expected to take a further 2 weeks. Traffic can continue to access Takitimu Drive Toll Road via the roundabout. 

  • SH29 Tauriko Village: From Friday 17 April traffic is travelling on 2 new lanes on the northern side of the village. This temporary layout provides one lane of traffic in each direction while we work on the southern side. Access for residents and businesses on the southern side is maintained via a temporary road. Night works (6pm to 6am) are planned for Sunday 19 April for barrier relocation. Temporary traffic management including a 3-way stop/go operation on SH29 and at the intersection with Cambridge Road, and a reduced speed limit of 30km/h will be in place.

  • SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road: A reduced speed limit of 70km/h remains in place while crews are working behind the barriers on the construction of a flyover bridge and southbound slip lane works for the Takitimu North Link project. Traffic is anticipated to be diverted onto the flyover bridge and southbound slip lane in the next year while works continue. 

  • SH2/SH29 Takitimu Drive: SH29 and SH2 traffic is now diverted onto temporary lanes northbound to Mount Maunganui and Tauranga CBD, this diversion will be in place until May. Traffic from SH29 to Fifteenth Ave will be detoured via SH2 Takitimu Drive to Elizabeth Street. SH2 traffic will still be able to travel to Fifteenth Ave. 

  • SH2/Fifteenth Ave: One lane at SH2/Fifteenth Ave near Edgecumbe Road is closed while the new connection to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road takes place, this is likely to remain in place until mid-2026. 

  • SH33 South of Paengaroa: Road resurfacing has started near Allport Road south of Paengaroa between 6am and 6pm each day. There will be stop/go traffic management with reduced speed limits in place Monday to Friday. The work is due to be completed by Friday 24 April.

 

  • SH33 South of Paengaroa:  A second worksite south of Paengaroa will start on Monday 20 April for 3 days between 6am and 6pm. There will be contraflow and stop/go traffic management in place along with short timeframes of stop/stop traffic management, short delays are expected.

  • SH2/Pahoia/Esdaile intersectionRoad widening works are underway at this intersection. Please be aware that speed restrictions and intermittent stop/go traffic management will be in place, which may result in longer delays.

  • SH2/Ōmokoroa Road intersection upgrade: The new roundabout is fully operational however a temporary speed limit will remain in place to enhance safety on the roundabout approaches. 

  • Minden Road North: The road between the new roundabout and the Te Puna shops is under various forms of traffic management, the work will be finished by the end of April.

 

Rotorua

  • SH36 Tauranga Direct Road – Hauraki Stream Bridge replacement: Starting end of April, construction will start on replacing a culvert 1km north of the SH36/Hamurana Road intersection. Traffic will be reduced to one lane, controlled by temporary traffic signals, lane and shoulder closures and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h. When the traffic management is first activated, it may take a short time to settle. The traffic lights are adjusted after seeing how traffic actually moves. Minor delays are expected. Construction will be complete in early 2027.

  • SH36 Manapouri Gorge night closure: SH36 will be closed for 2-3 nights for urgent repairs in Manapouri Gorge. The road will be closed at night and the date is to be confirmed. Access for residents will be retained. All traffic will be detoured on SH33 via SH29/SH2/SH30/SH5.

 

Work underway

 

  • SH36 Ngongotahā: A section of SH36 Ngongotahā Road, between Hood and Taui/Hall roads, is being rebuilt. Due to weather events and scheduling changes, a return to normal traffic flow is now expected by Friday 24 April,1 week later than originally planned. From 9am Mondays to 2:30pm Fridays southbound/Rotorua-bound traffic will be detoured left on Wikaraka Road, then right onto Taui Road before rejoining SH36 (left turn only). The southbound lane will open from 2:30pm Fridays to 9am Mondays. Access to and from side roads (Taui, Hall, Hood) is restricted to left in left out. Access to residents and businesses retained – follow traffic management crew directions. While SH36 remains open for northbound traffic there will be traffic management, lane shifts and temporary speed limits in place. Delays are expected and people are encouraged to allow extra time for their journey or take alternative routes. 

Eastern Bay of Plenty

  • SH2 Waimana Gorge: Crews returned to the Waimana Gorge on Tuesday 7 April for 4 weeks to complete repairs on an underslip. There will be stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit in place.

 

  • SH2 Waioweka Gorge: SH2 through Waioweka Gorge is now open 24/7 under stop/go traffic management. Closures will only occur when necessary. Motorists should expect delays of up to one hour. It’s a challenging area and there is still loose material on the hillside. Be prepared, the road may need to close at short notice if conditions change. Electronic message boards are in place at several points on the way into the gorge. Please keep an eye on these, as well as our social media pages, for the latest updates. 

  • SH2/Wainui Road, Matekerepu, near Ōpōtiki: Work is still underway in the area, and the roundabout is under stop/go traffic management with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h in place. The roundabout is expected to be fully completed by the end of April. 

  • SH2/Ōhiwa Beach Road/Waiōtahe Valley Back Road intersections near Ōpōtiki: Works are underway beside SH2 for 2 new teardrop roundabouts. Shoulder closures and stop/go traffic management are in place 7am to 6pm with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h. The road surface is uneven, please allow extra time when travelling through. Completion expected mid‑2027. 

  • SH35 near Waihau Bay: Due to an underslip near Waihau Bay the road is down to a single lane with priority give way 24/7. A solution is currently in the design phase to repair the underslip.

Tairāwhiti

  • SH35 Pōtaka to Wharekahika/Hicks Bay: Multiple sites are under stop/go traffic management while work continues to restore the road back to 2 lanes. Please allow for an extra 45 minutes to your journey in this area.

  • SH35 Wharekahika/Hicks Bay to Te Araroa: The road at Punaruku slip between Hicks Bay and Te Araroa is open under one lane stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit. The road may close again at short notice if conditions change.
