NZTA has identified an increase in congestion on the Auckland state highway network due to Special Vehicle Lane (SVL) non-compliance, impacting the safe and efficient operation of the network. Delays are impacting our public transport and freight lane’s safety and efficiency, reducing the benefit of these investments.
As Auckland Transport has the legal powers to undertake enforcement, they will be working in partnership with them.
The programme is ready to start enforcement from 27 July 2026 on SH16 The Strand. There will be a three-week grace period where warning letters will be issued, then from 17 August 2026 vehicles will be fined.
The first package of enforcement locations including indicative dates for final enabling works and commencing enforcement for the 2026 programme are as follows:
Night works on SH1 between Northcote Road and Esmonde Road
UPDATE: The dates for the night works between Northcote Road and Esmonde Road have changed. The work will now take place from 3 August to 10 August, with extended shifts on Friday 7 August and Saturday 8 August. During these hours, the southbound lanes will be fully closed, and lane restrictions will be in place on the northbound carriageway. A contingency shift has also been scheduled for Tuesday 11 August.
Overnight motorway closures

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises of the following closures for motorway improvements. Work delayed by bad weather will be completed at the next available date, prior to Friday, 07 August 2026. Please note this Traffic Bulletin is updated every Friday.
Unless otherwise stated, closures start at 9pm and finish at 5am. Traffic management may be in place before the advertised closure times for the mainline.
