Maintenance closure to improve SH2 Pekatahi Bridge
Pekatahi Bridge on State Highway 2 (SH2) will close for 6 days, from Saturday 4 July to midday Thursday 9 July.
The bridge will be closed 24 hours a day during this time and is expected to reopen by midday on Thursday 9 July.
There will be no access across the bridge during the closure, including for emergency services.
A detour will be in place for all traffic, including freight and High Productivity Motor Vehicles. Northbound and southbound traffic will detour via Tāneatua Road, Valley Road, Arawa Road, Hinemoa Street and State Highway 30 through Awakeri.
The detour is expected to add up to 20 minutes to travel times.
Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty
Work starting in the next 2 weeks
- Katikati: The Humes Fun Run and Walk will take place on Saturday 4 July, between 8am and 12pm. The start and finish points are at the War Memorial Hall, traffic management will be in place on the state highway, although the event course does not use the highway. Motorists should expect increased pedestrian activity in the area during this time.
- SH29 Tauriko: Work to install the new watermain along SH29 is continuing with the team shifting to the Tauranga-bound lane from Monday 6 July, between Te Ara Hoia Drive and 855 SH29. These works are expected to take 3 weeks. Temporary traffic management will be in place daily between 7am and 6pm daily, including shoulder closures, lane shifts, mobile operations and a temporary speed limit of 50km/h.
- Ōropi Road slip repairs – Tauranga City Council: The southbound lane on Ōropi Road, between the SH29A roundabout and Maleme Street, will be closed from Monday 6 July to Sunday 19 July for a slip repairs. Ōropi/southbound traffic will be detoured via Chadwick Road and Cameron Road. A temporary 30km/h speed limit and traffic lights will be in place for city/northbound traffic travelling through the site. Maleme Street and Ōropi Road north of the closure remain open in both directions. Please expect delays in the area, and along SH29A from Poike Road to Barkes Corner.
- Cambridge Road: On Tuesday 7 July, between 9am and 3pm, there will be a stop/go operation and temporary speed limit of 30km/h in place between 593 and 597 Cambridge Road to allow for pavement construction on the SH29-bound lane. Watermain pressure testing between 549 and 542 Cambridge Road is also planned to begin on Tuesday 7 July for approximately 10 days. Installation and removal of the testing equipment will require off-peak stop/go operations between 9am and 3pm on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 16 July. Shoulder closures and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place. To minimise disruption, this activity has been scheduled during the school holidays when traffic volumes are typically lower. Surfacing works will follow on Wednesday 15 and Friday 17 July between 9am and 3pm. These works will require stop/go traffic management, shoulder closures, and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h between 542 and 593 Cambridge Road for the duration of the works. The Tauriko Enabling Works project team will be observing the Matariki public holiday, with crews finishing on site Thursday 9 July and returning on Monday 13 July at 7am.
Work underway
- SH29 Ōmanawa Bridge: Construction activity is underway close to the Hamilton-bound edge of SH29 between Ōmanawa Bridge and the Ōmanawa Road intersection. Please slow down to 50km/h and take care when driving through the site. Night works are continuing as part of the Ōmanawa Bridge replacement project. This work will be in 2 areas, firstly on the westbound shoulder, immediately west of the Ōmanawa Road intersection, before moving to the eastern side of the existing bridge. As the work will be close to the traffic lanes expect temporary lane shifts and stop/go traffic management to ensure the work can be done safely.
Work hours – 8pm – 4:30am, Sunday to Thursday.
- SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road: A reduced speed limit of 70km/h remains in place while crews are working behind the barriers on the construction of a flyover bridge and southbound slip lane works for the Takitimu North Link project. Traffic is anticipated to be diverted onto the flyover bridge late July while works continue.
- SH2/SH29 Takitimu Drive: Final line removal is work underway in the eastbound area. During this time, the exit from SH29 to Fifteenth Avenue will remain closed. From there, work will shift to the bottom of the Fifteenth Avenue bridge on SH29 westbound, where we’ll begin widening the road. This will be a longer phase of work, expected to take around 9 months.
- SH2/Fifteenth Ave: Work is now focused on installing drainage and building the approaches at the top of Fifteenth Avenue. Decorative panels are being installed along the large soil nail wall. One lane at SH2/Fifteenth Ave near Edgecumbe Road is closed while the new connection to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road takes place, this is likely to remain in place until late 2026.
- SH2/Pahoia/Esdaile intersection: Road widening works are underway at this intersection. Please be aware that speed restrictions and intermittent stop/go traffic management will be in place which may result in longer delays.
- SH2 Ōmokoroa: The new roundabout is fully operational however a temporary speed limit will remain in place to enhance safety on the roundabout approaches.
- SH2 Ōmokoroa / Whakamārama: A programme of ground investigations is underway over coming weeks, on key sites along SH2 near Ōmokoroa, including locations at Youngson Road and Waipapa Stream, which are part of the Takitimu North Link Stage 2 project. People travelling through this area may notice these activities alongside SH2, which will be carried out under shoulder closures with no noticeable impact on traffic flow. Other survey work and walkover inspections of buildings, streams, wetlands and vegetation are also underway at several locations in Minden, Munro Road, Plummers Point Road, Youngson Road and along SH2 Whakamārama.
Rotorua

- SH5 Clayton Road/Lake Road: A lane closure is in place at the Clayton Road/Lake Road intersection on SH5 in Rotorua for utilities work, which is taking place at night between 6:30pm and 6am Sunday to Thursday nights until the end of August.
- SH36 Tauranga Direct Road: Construction is underway on replacing a culvert 1km north of the SH36/Hamurana Road intersection at Hauraki Stream. Traffic is reduced to one lane, controlled by temporary traffic signals, lane and shoulder closures and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h. Minor delays are expected. Construction will be complete in 2027. Oversized vehicles intending to use SH36 are required to detour via SH2, SH33, SH30 and SH5 for travel between Rotorua and Tauranga.
Eastern Bay of Plenty

- SH2 Awakeri: Road surface repair work near the Awakeri service station will take place on Wednesday 8 July, between 8am and 5pm. To allow the work to be completed safely, the petrol station entrances will be closed one at a time. Traffic management will be in place while work is underway.
Work underway
- SH2/Wainui Road, Matekerepu, near Ōpōtiki: A 30km/h temporary speed limit is in place until the final resurfacing on Matekerepu Stream Bridge is completed. This work is weather dependent and expected to be completed by August.
- SH2/Ōhiwa Beach Road/Waiōtahe Valley Back Road intersections near Ōpōtiki: Works are underway beside SH2 for 2 new teardrop roundabouts. SH2 is open with a 50km/h temporary speed limit. Over the next 2 weeks there will be stop/go at times for culvert replacement works. Works are ongoing on local (side) roads, and stop/go traffic management in place from 7am to 6pm with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h. The road surface is uneven, please allow extra time when travelling through. Completion expected mid‑2027.
- SH35 near Waihau Bay: Due to an underslip near Waihau Bay the road is down to a single lane with priority give way 24/7. A solution is currently in the design phase to repair the underslip.
