Northland Road Report

As this year’s summer programme finishes, you’ll start to see fewer high impact roadworks on our state highways.

Over winter, crews will focus on critical work like clearing drains, managing roadside vegetation, and patching potholes, to help keep roads safe and reliable.

2025/26 Northland road renewal season wrap-up

This brings to a close a busy 2025/26 summer road renewal season across Northland’s state highway network.

Over the season (September 2025 – May 2026), road crews delivered an extensive programme of rebuilding, resurfacing, and resealing works across the region. In total, we renewed approximately 186 lane kilometres of state highway, including:

  • 25 lane kilometres of rebuilds
  • 11 lane kilometres of resurfacing
  • 149 lane kilometres of resealing

Sites continuing into next season

  • SH1 Whakapara (Puhipuhi Road rebuild): The road rebuild is largely complete. However, flooding during the final stages of the project damaged sections of the road surface, including the Whakapara overflow bridge. A temporary seal has been applied to keep the road open and safe over winter. The final durable sealing will be completed next season once a suitable dry weather window is available.
  • SH10 near Zidich Road: Drainage, guardrail improvements and other enabling works have been completed, and the site has been made safe for winter. The main road rebuild and final surfacing will take place early next season when conditions are more suitable and are expected to take around 3 weeks to complete (weather permitting).

Additional sites deferred to next season

  • SH16 Kaukapakapa, near Inland Road – road rebuild
  • SH1 Whangārei central, Cheviot Street to Fourth Avenue – road rebuild
  • Remaining over 15 lane km of chipsealing (around 90% chipsealing programme completed this season)

Any partially completed sites have been made safe and will be monitored and maintained over winter until construction resumes next season in spring.
