Repairs for Rotokautuku Bridge, SH35 in Ruatoria – new closure date

The closure of State Highway 35 at Rotokautuku Bridge

The first date for work at the bridge will now be Wednesday 23 October between midday and 12.30pm.

Unfortunately programme delays, including a slightly longer than expected timeframe for sandblasting and fabricating the steel, have led to the change in timeframe.

During the closure, the highway will be closed in both directions between Bridge Rd and Thatcher Rd.

While the bridge remains structurally sound, repairs to the bearings and cross bracing are needed to restore the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle and to improve its strength.

Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) crews, on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), will be raising the bridge by a few millimetres to carry out this work.

A further two, 30 minute bridge closures are required before Christmas with the dates and times to be communicated in the next few weeks.

There are no viable detours. NZTA is reminding road users on this stretch of SH35 to plan for this delay or avoid travelling at these times.

Electronic signs (VMS boards) will be in place on the highway advising of the closure times/days from one week out.

Work to improve the bridge will be ongoing over the next few months. Outside of the planned closures, minimal impact on traffic is expected.

Despite the delay, crews still expect to finish the bridge improvements by late 2024.

SH2 Devil’s Elbow to close overnight next month as recovery continues.

A stretch of State Highway 2 at Devil’s Elbow north of Napier will be closed overnight in the first week of November, as the rebuild of the cyclone damage Devil’s Elbow continues.

The state highway between Tūtira and Aropaoanui Road, north of Napier will be closed from 9pm to 5am each night between Sunday 3 November to Thursday 7 November. The road will be open as normal from 5am on Friday 8 November.

During daytime hours, the road will be under traffic management through the Devil’s Elbow section.

Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) alliance crews, on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, will spend the 5 nights at Devil’s Corner realigning the single lane to move traffic away from the worksite. This is preparation for the recovery project starting later this year.

Devil’s Corner, which has been labelled Project I, will be the largest, and last,  of the recovery projects in the SH2 Devil’s Elbow section.

SH5 Napier to Taupō: Recovery alliance Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) continues to progress safety improvements, as well as repair, recovery and maintenance activities at multiple sites on SH5 between Eskdale and Waipunga. More information.
