Bay of Plenty Road Report

SH32 Overnight closures for overhead lines work

Until late April, Transpower is upgrading overhead lines in the area between State Highway 41 (SH41) and the Whangamata Road intersection with State Highway 32 (SH32).

From Monday, 9 March, SH32 will be closed for four nights between Whangamata Road and the SH41 intersection. The highway will closed at 10pm each night and reopen at 4am the following morning to allow crews to safely haul new power lines across the highway. The road must be fully closed during this time to ensure the safety of both workers and road users. The work will be completed and the highway fully re-opened by 4am Friday 13 March.

For northbound travel, State Highway 1 remains available as an alternative route.

SH36 Ngongotahā Road rebuild starting Monday 9 March

Essential repairs are needed to SH36 Ngongotahā Road between the railway line and Gull Ngongotahā. The pavement on this section of SH36 has been patched for many years now and requires a full asphalt rebuild. These repairs are a priority to prevent pavement failures this winter.

To ensure the project is delivered as efficiently as possible, the southbound lane of SH36 will be closed between Wikaraka Street and Hall Road for 6 weeks from 9 March. During this period, all southbound traffic will be detoured at Wikaraka Street.

The closure will operate each week from Monday at 9:00 am until Friday at 2:30 pm. There will be no weekend work, and the southbound lane will reopen from Friday 2:30pm until Monday 9:00am.

Northbound traffic will continue to use SH36 with a reduced speed limit in place, while the detour will manage all southbound movement.

SH2 maintenance ‘super weekends’ return across Tauranga this March

A series of maintenance “super weekends” is coming to State Highway 2 (SH2) this month, beginning on Takitimu Drive from tomorrow (Friday 6 March) to Monday 8 March.

This approach was successfully trialled last year, with crews able to work continuously 24/7 over several days. The uninterrupted schedule allowed significant progress to be made, so 3 more super weekends are planned for this month. The work will start at 6pm on a Friday night and continue through to 6am on the Monday morning.

The work involves removing the existing asphalt road surface and reconstructing it layer by layer with a new one, noise and vibration can be associated with this type of work. Line marking is then reinstated once the surface has been replaced.

6-8 March – SH2 Takitimu Drive – southbound

What we’re doing: This work was originally planned for Friday 13 February but was postponed due to the weather. We’re resurfacing the southbound outer lane (towards Tauriko) between the Chapel Street on-ramp and the Elizabeth Street roundabout.

How this impacts your journey:

Night closures (6pm–6am): Both SH2 southbound lanes will be closed from the Chapel Street on‑ramp to the Elizabeth Street roundabout. The detour route is via Chapel Street, Cameron Road, Elizabeth Street and back onto SH2 at the roundabout and vice versa.

Daytime traffic (6am–6pm): One southbound lane will remain open, with a reduced speed limit in place through the worksite while crews are still working. Due to the reduced lane width, delays are to be expected.

13-15 March SH2 – Tauranga Eastern Link (between Sandhurst Dr and Baypark interchange) – westbound

What we’re doing: We’re resurfacing a section of the Tauranga Eastern Link in the westbound lanes (towards Mount Maunganui) between Sandhurst Drive and the SH2/SH29A Baypark interchange.

How this impacts your journey: There will be an overnight detour in place for westbound traffic (towards Mount Maunganui) via Truman Lane back out to SH29A/SH2. The work will start at 6pm on Friday 13 March and continue through to 6am Monday 16 March. During the day, SH2 will have one lane open, with a reduced speed limit through the worksite while crews are still working. Delays are to be expected.

21-23 March – SH2 Te Awanui Drive (Tauranga Harbour Bridge) – southbound

What we’re doing:
We’re resurfacing the southbound lanes (towards Tauranga) between the Whareroa boat ramp and Tauranga Harbour Bridge on Te Awanui Drive.

How this impacts your journey: While this work is underway there will be lane closures and switches with a reduced speed limit. The work will start at 6pm on Saturday 21 March and continue through to 6am Monday 23 March. Both lanes will be open Monday 23 with work being completed on Monday night.
