Weigh-in-motion systems to be installed for Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre
Work to improve road safety and monitor heavy vehicles on Wellington’s state highway network is stepping up a gear.
Early next month, contractors will begin preparing SH1 and SH59 for installing weigh-in-motion systems for the Mackays Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) being built on the Kāpiti Coast
They will be installed in three locations: one on SH1 Transmission Gully, one on SH1 Raumati Straights, and another on SH59.
This work will prepare the road for the upcoming installation of weigh-in-motion technology. The actual scale installation will be a much quicker process and will be done at least 20 days after the pavement work.
Contractors will complete the initial works as quickly as possible. They will be on-site from Tuesday, 3 March until Friday, 13 March.
Because the sensors have to be installed into the road, work from Tuesday, 3 March to Tuesday, 10 March will require weekday single-lane closures, 24/7, on the northbound and southbound lanes of SH1, and an onramp closure at the SH59 Paekākāriki interchange.
Once contractors have completed preparatory works on SH1, they will move to SH59, south of the Paekākāriki interchange, to complete similar work for another weigh-in-motion system planned for this location.
This will require stop/go traffic management and is expected to take place between Thursday, 12 and Friday, 13 March.
Lane closures will be in place 24/7 on weekdays only. They will affect traffic flow and cause travel delays. Drivers are encouraged to factor this into their travel plans.
Because this work is weather-dependent, schedules may change at short notice.

One week of night closures coming for State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill this month
The next set of night closures for maintenance on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill is just 10 days away.
The route will have a week of night closures on from Sunday, 15 March, to Thursday, 19 March. The closures will run from 9 pm to 4 am each night, finishing at 4 am, Friday 20 March.
Escorted crossings are available for people who need to travel while the night closure is in place. There will be one crossing in each direction that drivers can book for:
- 10.30 pm – Featherston to Hutt
- 11.30 pm – Hutt to Featherston
Drivers should plan ahead and make a booking if they need to travel the route at night, as the only alternative detour is via the Pahiatua Track or SH3 Te Ahu a Turanga, which is a much longer route.
Important information for Remutaka Hill closures:
- Escorted crossings are available during closure nights but must be booked in advance. We always communicate well before planned closures, so people have plenty of time to make bookings.
- Bookings can be made online on the Waka Kotahi website – Remutaka Hill Closure Escort Booking Form
- Bookings are essential – drivers who turn up without one risk being turned away. If you have a genuine emergency on the night, the hill manager will decide how best to help you.
- The escorted crossings are for light vehicles only. To keep our contractors safe, heavy vehicles cannot be accommodated.
- Drivers should arrive at least 15 minutes before their crossing time. This helps ensure escorted crossings depart on time and stay on schedule.
- Drivers must follow all instructions from contractors during crossings and remain behind the pilot vehicle until the crossing is finished. This is critical for the safety of drivers and roadworkers.
