Wellington Road Report

Detour required for State Highway 1 Transmission Gully nightworks

Drivers intending to head north on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully next Sunday and Monday nights (9 and 10 August) can expect a slightly longer journey.

Road crews will be resurfacing northbound lanes on State Highway 1, just south of where it splits with State Highway 59, between 9 pm and 4:30 am on both nights. Traffic management will be set up from 7pm, so road users should expect delays from then.

Two sections of the motorway will be repaired. Because this is a mill and fill repair that uses heavy machinery and requires road excavation, access through the repair sites will be unavailable for all traffic.

This means the usual direct access to State Highway 1 Transmission Gully won’t be available for drivers heading north to the Kāpiti Coast.

Instead, they will have to detour by either staying on State Highway 59, or by heading north on State Highway 59, exiting at the Mungavin Interchange, then heading south to rejoin State Highway 1 using Kenepuru Link Road.

Work schedule and detour route:

  • Sunday, 9 August and Monday, 10 August, 9 pm – 4:30 am
    • Northbound access to SH1 Transmission Gully CLOSED
    • Northbound traffic can detour via SH59, or via SH59 to Mungavin Interchange and Kenepuru Link Road to SH1
    • Traffic management will be set up from 7 pm. Travel delays can be expected while this is underway

Nightworks and closure planned for State Highway 2 Masterton to Carterton

Wairarapa drivers need to be ready for maintenance nightworks on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton next Sunday night (2 August).

Contractors will be patching two damaged sections of the highway, one near Ravensdown and the other near Norfolk Road roundabout. These sections of the highway have not been repaired or resurfaced recently.

The planned repairs will require excavation work meaning traffic won’t be able to drive through the affected areas.A range of other maintenance work will also be completed.

Vegetation affecting driver visibility will also be removed from the Wiltons/East Taratahi and Norfolk/Cornwall roundabout. This will improve safety at these intersections.

It means State Highway 2 will be closed in both directions between Hughes Lines and the Norfolk Road/Cornwall Street roundabout. The closure will run from 9 pm on Sunday, 2 August to 4:30 am on Monday, 3 August.

A full closure is safer for road crews. It also allows them to complete their work much faster.

A local road detour will be available via Hughes Line and Cornwall Street
