Waikato Road Report
Arapuni Dam Closure
Arapuni Road across the dam will be closed to vehicles from July 2026, for 24-36 months.
They will use a one-lane detour route, managed by traffic lights, along Powerhouse Road for local essential traffic only. Freight/heavy commercial vehicles and long-distance travel should use state highway routes.
East Waikato
Work underway
- SH25 Tairua: Early works have started on the Pepe Stream Bridge replacement project and traffic management is in place for the duration of the project until late 2027. Access across the stream will be maintained for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists but occasional delays can be expected.
- SH25 Kūaotunu Hill: Work is progressing to repair the underslip on SH25 at Kūaotunu Hill. The project is expected to take until mid-July to complete, mainly under stop/go traffic management, using traffic lights. The site is about 250 metres long and there are traffic management staff on site 24 hours a day.
- SH27 Ohinekaua Stream Bridge replacement: Work has begun between Patetonga and Tahuna with an intermittent speed restriction of 50km/h. Later in July traffic will be switched on to a diversion around the site which includes a single-lane temporary bridge and delays can be expected.
West Waikato
Work starting soon
- SH1 Cambridge Expressway: Thanks to good weather and strong productivity, asphalt renewal works on the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway are ahead of schedule. Stage 5, closure of the southbound off-ramp at the Northern Interchange (Cambridge West/Velodrome exit) is now planned for week commencing Monday 20 July (weather dependent) through to mid-August. Traffic wanting to access Cambridge southbound from Hamilton will need to continue south down the expressway and exit at the Victoria Road Interchange at Hautapu. Please consider all alternative routes to ease congestion.
The Tamahere Interchange is not impacted by this work, but we do expect increased congestion in this area with delays of up to 20 minutes at peak travel times because of the volume of SH1 traffic merging to one lane in each direction, south of Tamahere. Congestion will be monitored, with alternative route traffic management adjusted as needed. The expressway will be open to 4 lanes with temporary speed limits and all interchanges operating for Matariki weekend.
Since we began asphalting work on the Cambridge section, Budget 2026 included funding for SH1 Cambridge to Piarere Expressway Road of National Significance (C2P) project. Subject to planning approvals and other permits, property acquisition, and final design, we expect the first phase of construction activity for C2P to start in early 2027. Given the timing, we have added Stages 7 and 8 to the Cambridge works. This will see our project complete asphalting works to widen the Cambridge section road alignment, near the Southern Interchange, to meet the new alignment for the online section of C2P.
